A hand-crafted spindleback settee conceived in response to architecture. DIANA brings together the traditions of Windsor chair-making with a bespoke approach to form, proportion and materiality, allowing each commission to develop a particular relationship with the space it will inhabit.
The original DIANA was commissioned in walnut for the entrance hall at Surrey Manor. The curve of its seat responds to the geometry of the staircase, while two individually gouged saddles are oriented towards different views through the surrounding spaces – creating a place for two people to pause within the architecture.
Developed from Hensby Workshop’s distinctive spindleback design, DIANA is a collaboration between CARPENTE and Matthew Hensby. Her form can be adapted in response to her intended architectural setting, while traditional chair-making techniques – including hand-gouged saddles, individually shaped spindles and steam-bent timber – give each piece the character and subtle variation of furniture made by hand.
DIANA can be re-editioned in selected woods and finishes, with form and dimensions developed in response to each commission.
